| MIDNITE the rebel skunk |
 |
In 1985, another publisher expressed interest. But not in
doing Hugo; they preferred that I create something "adventure". So I concieved
Midnite, whose enemies were the rich of New York, specifically the "if
you can't stand no heat, move out" landlord types I was dealing with at
the time. The series was personal enough that I soon grew to love it, and,
feeling that it may be my last opportunity, I threw in every idea and gag
that sprang to mind into the stories (too many) in a sort of "stream-of-conciousness"
effort. It was a disappointment when, midway through the series, the publisher
(who had ultimately seen fit to announce a revival of Hugo) cancelled all
its artists' contracts, and then went out of business.
